The Marathon of Hope

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and began an extraordinary journey that would capture the hearts of millions. After losing his right leg to cancer at age 18, Terry embarked on his "Marathon of Hope" - a cross-country run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Running the equivalent of a marathon every day for 143 days, Terry covered 5,373 kilometres before cancer returned, forcing him to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ontario. Though he passed away on June 28, 1981, his legacy lives on through the annual Terry Fox Run, which has raised over $850 million for cancer research worldwide.

Terry's courage, determination, and selfless dedication to helping others continues to inspire generations. His dream of finding a cure for cancer remains alive through the millions who run, walk, and donate in his honor each year.
